PENWITH’S
latest rock trio, the STG Project, pose the question, ‘In today's
climate of music as commodity', and its associated downward spiralling
collection of one chord wonders masquerading as artists who
will save the world?" Before you ponder that for too long,
let us reveal that the group themselves mean to offer themselves
up as a solution. Well, they say aim high – and STG Project does
have musical pedigree.
Penwith's
latest rock trio is made up from former Sequoia frontman Shane Bailey,
aka Blaze, percussionist Ged Kingsford, drummer for many a local
band and bassist Tim Chapple, who is also head of the
Top of the Hill label.
Tim
told Info the STG Project are producing a collection of music with
both a nod back to earlier times, while compassing the technology
and the outlook of the 21st century. And they're keen not to be
pigeon holed, aiming to push the boundaries where “Jazz meets rock
meets acid meets metal- meets blues.”
However,
since the group are instrumental, the trio really let their music
do all the talking. So far they have only played a handful
of gigs but they already have a record out.
Handily,
the CD. containing five live tracks, has been Issued on Tim's label,
which promotes Cornish music and musicians.
Says
Tim: “The album was recorded in one take, and is as near to
a live sound as it's possible to get. The band has consciously tried
to bring back some ‘musicality' into the scene we are
all influenced by people like Jeff Beck and the amazing jazz/prog
bands of the 70s.
"We
are so unfashionable at the moment in that we are doing something
completely different to the norm there's certainly no one around
making a sound like us. Ged Kingsford has brought a decidedly jazz
feel to it all. Blend that with Shane's more rock approach and you've
got something quite individual.”
The
album can he purchased from www.cornishmusic.com, and the group
hopes to set up more gigs soon.
