Charles Pinkney Mousehole

Charles Pinkney

I am a self taught artist.  I decided to become an artist in 1990 after studying the work of abstract painter Gillian Ayres.  I see my paintings as a form of communication in which I can express and convey ideas and emotions from within my subconscious and my imagination. My intension is to share this experience with the viewer and also to stimulate an emotional response from them. Although I do not use any formal plans or preconceived ideas in my paintings, they can often reflect forms, colours and patterns found around the Cornish village of Mousehole in which I live. I begin each new work   by making some basic marks on the canvas. These are applied quickly and instinctively, using loose gestural marks with splashes, drips and splatters of paint.  Each new mark on the painting surface is made as a response to the ones previously applied. As the painting progresses, it increasingly builds a sense of form and structure according to its own rules. This method continues until I feel that the painting is complete.
