Over the centuries fishing has been the most important industry for Cornwall. This is understandable with the bounty available in the sea.

Unfortunately over the last few decades fishing has declined, but is still flourishing in the nearby port of Newlyn.

Newlyn, even with its decline in tonnage of fish landed, still lands more fish than any other port in England.

Even with a declining fishing industry, fishing is still an important part of the Cornish heritage. To celebrate this, a Fish Festival is held in Newlyn, which in excess of 20,000 people attend. It is held on August Bank Holiday Monday. In 2002 the festival was attended by the famous chef, Rick Stein.

The fish fair enables the public to see the great variety of fish species landed in Newlyn and the chance to visit fishing boats. Combined within the event is a craft fair and traditional Cornish entertainments.

Pots are an integral part of the crab and lobster fishing industry. Traditionally these pots were made of willow, however only a few  fishermen use this type now.
