Porthleven is an extremely picturesque village, 12
miles from
Penzance. Like many cornish sea towns, Porthleven
emerged as a fishing village, hence the town is
based around a harbour. The shops and restaurants
are all within easy walking distance of the
harbour. |

Around the harbour is evidence of

The coastline around Porthleven is great to visit
in both summer and winter. The beaches are sandy,
and have a reputation with surfers. However
beware, surfers require to be very
proficient.
The harbour faces directly into the prevailing
wind during winter, making it prone to spectacular
storms. The building shown below, the
Bickford-Smith Institute and clock tower, is just above the
beach and often surf breaks over its roof during
rough storms. |

Only a twenty minute walk from
Porthleven is an area of special scientific
interest, Loe Bar. Loe bar is a barrier of sand
and flint allowing a freshwater lake to form
behind it. Currents at this beach can make it very
dangerous to swimmers. |
