St Germoe Church SW 585-294

The granite church was built in the twelfth century on the site of an earlier celtic church. The church was extended in the fourteenth century with the addition of the north aisle. On the porch can be seen stone carvings of long tailed monkeys. These Germoe Monkeys were believed to ward off evil.

At the rear of the cemetery is St Germoe’s Chair, dating before the Norman Conquest. The reason for the chair’s existence is a mystery, but it was used in Palm Sunday celebrations. Above the chair can be seen two stone carved heads.

The font pre-dates the current church and is likely to come from the earlier church on this site. Close to the church is St Germoe's Holy Well.
